The Bee Gees’ “Heartbreaker”: A Song for a Different Voice
The Bee Gees’ “Heartbreaker” has an interesting backstory. While many fans might associate the song with the brothers Gibb’s signature falsettos, it wasn’t originally intended for them.

Penned in 1982, “Heartbreaker” was written by Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb for the legendary singer Dionne Warwick. The Bee Gees were not only songwriters at this point in their career, but also established producers under the moniker Gibb-Galuten-Richardson. They produced Warwick’s entire “Heartbreaker” album, with the title track becoming a hit for her. Barry Gibb even lent his backing vocals and guitar work to the song.

Dionne Warwick’s “Heartbreaker” was a smooth and soulful ballad, perfectly capturing the classic heartbreak narrative. The song resonated with audiences, reaching the top 10 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

The Bee Gees themselves wouldn’t record “Heartbreaker” until much later. In 2001, it found its way onto their compilation album “Their Greatest Hits: The Record.” Their version remained true to the original’s spirit, showcasing their signature harmonies alongside the familiar melody.

“Heartbreaker” serves as a unique entry in the Bee Gees’ catalog. Though not originally a song they sang themselves, it highlights their songwriting prowess and versatility. Whether in Dionne Warwick’s soulful rendition or the Bee Gees’ later take, “Heartbreaker” remains a powerful ballad about love and loss.
